oma's black forest cake

Every birthday needs a birthday cake! It was the perfect time to pull out my Oma's black forest cake recipe. I haven't had this since I was a little girl (my Oma passed away in '95). This was by far my favorite part of the meal. But, I'm a bit biased, I love dessert - especially black forest cake! Though I feel like I should keep this one secret... I'll share with you!

Oma's Black Forest Cake

Ingredients
1 3/4 cup flour
1 3/4 cup sugar
3 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 cup vegetable oil
7 eggs, separated
3/4 cup water
1/2 cup cocoa powder
approximately 1 tsp vanilla extract
2-4 pints whipping cream (I just used the medium-size Cool Whip tub, defrosted)
2 cans cherries (optional)

Instructions
Boil water, add cocoa, stir and cool. Sift flour, baking powder, salt and sugar and set aside.

Mix oil and egg yokes, add to cooled cocoa mix, and then add to sifted flour mix. Beat egg whites until stiff, fold in mixture. Grease and flour spring form pan.

Preheat oven to 350 and bake for 1 hour. Cool and slice cake in 3 slices. Layer with Cool Whip and cherries. Frost with Cool Whip.
